Babson College announces the inaugural class of Weissman Scholars. These five outstanding students, selected from a group of eighteen finalists, will be part of Babson’s Class of 2012.
Aside from her love for reading and drawing, Cori has developed a passion for politics. Having participated in Model United Nations competitions, being elected as a Kansas delegate for the Democratic Convention, and being involved in Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, Cori says her interest lies in the field of social entrepreneurship.
Throughout high school, Jacob cultivated a love of music and art. Currently the drummer of a rock band, Jacob describes himself as ‘intellectually curious.’ At Babson, Jacob plans to continue as a cross-country track athlete and looks forward to leaving Babson with the creativity and experience to do something truly unique.
Shelley moved many times in different parts of the world. From that experience, she learned she enjoys embracing new cultures. Shelley is heavily involved in community service projects. Her passion for international economics and Spanish will follow her to Babson where she intends to learn how to start and run an environmentally conscious enterprise that produces healthy low sugar food for diabetics.
While attending California Boys State, Jason enjoyed participating in debates and speaking competitions. He is also interested in technology having filmed and created promotional material for nonprofits throughout high school. His dream business is to own a film production company that specializes in providing media for the mobile market.
Shoney has developed passions for graphic design and helping his community while in high school. In Uzbekistan, Shoney taught English and raised funds for disabled children from a local boarding school. In his spare time, he likes playing guitar, reading or writing. After Babson, Shoney’s goal is to join the marketing team of a humanitarian organization.
Growing out of Bob and Jan Weissman’s deep commitment to Babson, the Weissman Scholarship Program fulfills their desire to make an investment that will build and sustain a new level of educational excellence for future business and community leaders. The Weissman Scholarship is a full-tuition award that also provides support for research, stipends for travel and seed money to start a venture or pursue a global service project.
“I’ll always be grateful that I’ve lived in a society where I could aspire and achieve,” says Bob Weissman, a Babson alumnus from 1964, an honorary degree holder from the College in 1994, and chair of Babson’s capital campaign. “Now I am banking on Babson College and our Weissman Scholars to play an increasingly important role in building a better world.”
