Elizabeth Swanson Goldberg has been named “Teacher of the Year” by the undergraduate Class of 2008, the second consecutive year to receive the honor!

Last Year, in addition to being named Teacher of the Year the first time, Goldberg was also presented the Dean’s Teaching Award and named “A Woman Who Makes A Difference” at Babson.

I'm especially proud of being able to connect in such positive ways with students as a liberal arts faculty member at a school of management and entrepreneurship. I am delighted that students have been so open to and engaged with the subjects I teach, particularly in the area of human rights,” said Goldberg of her award.

Goldberg, who holds the Mandell Family Term Chair, teaches Arts and Humanities Foundation courses, courses in international literature, and the typically over-subscribed advanced liberal arts course “In the Extreme: An interdisciplinary approach to human rights.

“In the Extreme” begins with philosophical definitions of human rights,

then moves to specific cases, paying special attention to the role of art, literature, and film in addressing human rights.

In addition to her current honors, Babson nominated Goldberg to be the 2008 U.S. Professor of the Year, an award sponsored by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education). The winners will be announced in the fall.

Goldberg has published articles in journals and edited collections in the areas of multicultural literature and pedagogies, gender studies, and human rights, and a book entitled Beyond Terror: Gender, Narrative, Human Rights (Rutgers University Press, September, 2007).  She is currently co-editing two volumes on human rights and literature, and one book on torture in the post-9/11 world that includes essays and testimonials by torture survivors and non-survivor human rights workers.

For the last five years, Goldberg has helped coordinate Babson’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Day to honor the slain civil rights activist.

Goldberg lives on Cape Cod with husband David and daughter Marcelle. She is Vice-Chair of the Barnstable County Human Rights Commission and serves as a Director on the Board for The Emancipation Network, the Sandwich-based organization that helps survivors of human trafficking and modern slavery by providing sustainable income.

She earned both a B.A. and M.A. at Northeastern University, and a Ph.D. from Miami University of Ohio.
