Children Affected by Chernobyl Tragedy Find Friends & Fun at Babson

Babson College will host 73 children who are part of the Boston Chernobyl Children’s Project on its Wellesley campus on Tuesday, July 22nd.

Students, staff, and faculty volunteers will provide an afternoon of fun activities, good food, laughter and companionship, to 73 children who arrived in Boston June 24th from Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine to receive medical and dental evaluation and treatment, and rest.

The Chernobyl tragedy that occurred in April 1986 continues to be the worst radiation catastrophe that has ever occurred, and the effect of it has not gone away. These children – not yet born at the time of the accident – live in regions of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus that remain contaminated with radioactive material.

Lisa Thomas, coordinator of volunteer programs for Babson’s Bernon Center, is recruiting the volunteers. This is the fourth year that the Bernon Center and Babson Executive Conference Center have teamed up to provide one of the memorable social experiences for the children during their Boston-area stay. Each year the number of campus volunteers has grown.

The children, ranging in age from 8 to 13, will live with host families across Massachusetts and New Hampshire for a four-week period - where a month of clean food, water and air increases their health immensely.

Established in 1995, the Boston-based Chernobyl Children Project USA Inc. is a non-profit organization providing relief to children whose health has been affected by the 1986 nuclear accident.  CCP-USA has brought more than 1,400 children to the area to live with “host families” for one month while they are evaluated by medical and dental professionals across New England.
