First Time Users

Students:  You have been issued a login and password.  To use the service click on the "Connect to" above and then click on the "Forgot Password" link, and CapitalIQ will notify you.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All Student access expires at the end of each semester.  Only students enrolled in classes for the current semester will be allowed access.

STUDENTS: If you are currently enrolled in a class, you can obtain your username for Capital IQ by clicking on the "Forgot your Password?" link on the Capital IQ homepage.  Just enter your Babson email address in the box and Capital IQ will email you a password.

Faculty or staff member:  to obtain a  username and password for Capital IQ, please email your request to Rori Friedman at rfriedman@capitaliq.com. Your request must include your first name, last name, and email address.

Basic Steps
  Company Intelligence

To begin a search select the "Company Intelligence" tab and select "Search Profiles" for profiles of companies or people. Capital IQ provides information on financial sponsors (VC, private equity, and all funds), domestic and international public companies, portfolio companies, investment professionals, corporate executives, board members, funds and partnerships, industries, geographies, macroeconomic data, and market indices.

  • To conduct a search, type in a name (or partial name) of an entity, select the profile type you're searching for, and click GO.
  • To search exclusively by ticker symbol, enter 'T=' and then the ticker symbol.
  • When searching for people, you can search by last name OR first and last names. Enter your search text in the format 'Smith' or 'Smith, John' respectively.
To begin screening, mouse over the Analytics & Targeting tab, select Screening, and select the type of screen you'd like to run. From the Screen Builder page, you can use the radio buttons alon gthe top to switch your screen from one type to another (e.g. from Company to Person screening). The screening tool allows you to find comparable companies, people, key developments, fixed income securities or transactions according to a wide array of data points. The screening tools are integrated so you can combine company, people, key development or transaction details in a single search.

Other Special Features:
Clicking any linked number allows you to audit Capital IQ's calculations. As you mouse over the calculations to see what line items are included or excluded, you can drill down to the corresponding SEC filing to see the source. Capital IQ will highlight in red the number in question. You can also mouse over any of the linked numbers to view fiscal year and quarter, period end date, filing date, period type, value, and currency. Click the arrow in the upper left-hand corner of the page to view older historical periods.

The Annotated Stock Chart page displays one year of pricing data for your target company with annotations for Corporate Timeline events (daily deal articles, key developments, SEC filings, transactions, upcoming events, historical splits and dividends). Scroll down to view and/or customize the Corporate Timeline events that appear as annotations on your chart. You also have the ability to customize the timeframe or components of the chart using the Chart Options and Series List sections of the Annotated Stock Chart page.

The Comtex News feature allows you to view and read articles. Search for specific articles using tickers, keywords or date ranges in the Advanced Search section at the top of the page. You can select the specific articles you would like to view by putting a check mark next to them and exporting to Word, or simply click into the titles to read through the articles one at a time.

Quick Tips

  • Search for companies by typing in the name or "t=ticker" in the upper left-hand search box.
  • Move your cursor to the upper left-hand search box by pressing "Alt+S" on your keyboard.
  • Search for People by typing in "lastname, firstname" in the upper left-hand search box.
  • Right click on the name of a company, person or Project and choose Open in New Window to launch that page in a separate browser window.
  • Quickly revisit any of your previous targeting searches within a Project by clicking the Targeting and Screening link in the left-hand toolbar.
  • View your firm's previous interactions with any other company under the Coverage Summary section of the company's Tearsheet.
  • Find competitors for a company using the Competitors, Quick Comps, or Use Targeting/Screening links in a company's profile.
  • Begin a Find Buyers or Investors search by not making your criteria required. You can alwyas click back and refine the search later.
  • View your match rationale from teh Find Buyers or Investors Targeting Results page by selecting HTML as your report format and then clicking Generate Report.
  • Screen for specific companies from teh Screen Builder page using the Add Companies link under the Coverage Management section.
  • Use the upper left-hand search box to find profiles for market indices, currency rates, interest rates, funds or geographies.
  • Screen against any list(s) that you have created using the Coverage Management section of links on the Screen Builder page.
  • Change your global currency settings by going to My Capital IQ > My Settings > Financial Settings. In Excel, go to Capital IQ > Settings > Currency.
  • View your saved screens by mousing over the Screening & Analytics tab and selecting Screening > My Saved Screens.
  • Add more fields to your Screening Results page by clicking the Customize button under Display Options.
  • Refine your industry search in Screening & Analytics by selecting your industry and checking Search by Primary Industry Only.
  • Limit your geographic search to primary addresses only in Screening & Analytics by selecting your geographic location and checking Search by Headquarters Only.
  • Delete and rename Favorites in My Settings > Favorites / Start Page.
  • Click View Aggregates from your Transaction Screening Results page to see aggregated deal information by industry, geographic region, transaction type or transaction status.
  • Customize the data on a company Tearsheet by going to My Capital IQ > My Settings > Company Tearsheet Customization. You can add or delete sections and customize the order in which the data appears.
  • To view a complete list of shortcut keystrokes that may be used when searching for companies, mouse over the Company Intelligence tab, select "Search Profiles", and click the information link in the upper-right-hand corner.
