Community Action Program (CAP)

What is the Community Action Program?

The Community Action Program (CAP) is an opportunity for work-study eligible students to do community service work for up to 20 hours a week and get paid for it through Federal and Babson work-study funding. Check here more information on available positions.  Please email Josh Stevenson jstevenson@babson.edu or call him at 781-239-5565 if you are interested in a position.

Get Paid for Community Service?

We know it sounds a little unusual. Under the Reauthorization of the Higher Education Amendments, Congress mandated that 5% of college’s work-study allocation must be utilized in community service. This is a great opportunity to promote community service work while not sacrificing time that could spend at a paying job.

Why Should I Do This Instead of Working on Campus?

If you want to get a different type of experience, than this is a terrific way to do so. You are able to make a difference in the community or just try something different while still getting paid. You will gain real life experience at an agency, while at the same time gaining a greater sense of some of society’s problems and what can be done to help.

What Type of Community Service Work Would I Be Doing?

Your CAP experience would include direct contact with many of the people that community agencies serve. The Bernon Center for Public Service has listings for many types of agencies that serve many types of people. Tutoring children, helping the elderly, befriending a mentally disabled person, and feeding the hungry are just some of the many ways that you can serve the community.

How can I become a part of the CAP program?

You can become part of the CAP program by contacting the Bernon Center at mailto:bernon@babson.edu;thomasl@babson.edu or Josh Stevenson jstevenson@babson.edu or call 781-239-5565 for an informational interview.
